Neutralizing a Colorful Space

Elissa Writes: I attached a picture of the kitchen to the house we just bought.  I personally dont like yellow paint, but am having a hard time finding another color that will look good with these cabinets and floors, since they both have yellow hues to them. Any suggestions? Also, the adjacent living room has a HUGE red accent wall, so it'd need to match that as well! Thanks! See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

For The Love of Fiesta Ware

Sharon Writes: I have a newer home. It was 3 years old when we bought it. The walls are a burgundy color with vaulted ceilings and open floor plan. I have a fire engine red sofa, black hutch, and end tables.  I have every different color of fiesta ware in the hutch.  I want to repaint but I am having trouble finding a color that looks good with the sofa and the trim/floors which are oak.  I love big bold color.  Any ideas? Grey Tones

Nicole Writes: We are planning on redoing our kitchen, and changing white counters and light oak cabinets to dark cabinets with lighter granite countertops.  I would like to stick with a neutral color on the wall but I'm sick of beige.  I wanted the cabinets to stand out so didn't want a paint color that was too dark, but I plan on doing neutral throughout the house so I wanted to do something a little different in the kitchen.  Help! Thanks! See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

A Little Jewel

Jan Writes: My living room faces east, and has cherry floors and white trim.  I have beautiful peacock colored curtains - medium blue/green.  It's a small room and has one double window.  It doesn't have a doorway but has a big opening to the front hall.  I have a medium raspberry chair and a pale yellow floral chair and ottoman with pink roses and greenery.  I have pale pink on the walls and think they look ghastly.  I want a room that's like my little jewel and hope to someday get a loveseat.  What color walls would be best?   I was thinking a deep blue or green.  Also, what color loveseat would you recommend for the space?   Thanks,   Jan See Answer From Diane Henkler »

Finding Inspiration in a White Space

Ann Writes: I just did some changes to my living room, which has a high ceiling that is open from the second floor. The house is located by the sea, and has dark wood fixtures and terra cotta floor tiles. Currently all of the walls in the house are painted white. The one wall I made some changes to now needs a coat of paint, and I was wondering if I should continue with the white theme or give it a different color (accent wall). Also, I have wicker furniture in the room. What color would you recommend using for a space like this?  See Answer From Kate Riley »

A Satin Finish

Courtney Writes: We bought a flipped house a couple of years ago.  They painted the bathroom and kitchen in the same matte finish paint as the rest of the house.  We are ready to re-paint, but I'm not sure what to use in the kitchen and bathroom so it is easy to clean and wipe down.  What finish do you recommend in bathrooms and kitchens? Working With Purple

Giovanni Writes: What paint colors would go good with a deep purple carpet? It is really dark, but yet still very purple. It is in the living room and we want to paint the walls a different color. The previous owners painted the walls white, with purple trim. We have a brown leather sectional, and we want to make it more cozy and comforting and until we can replace the carpet. We are stuck with it, please help! See Answer From Diane Henkler »

Honey Oak Trim

Pam Writes: Everyone has white trim these days, so it's difficult to find any photos with honey oak trim. Can you suggest paint colors that go well with honey oak trim? In the dining room and kitchen we have an open floor plan with South facing windows, and a North facing window in the living room. Also, the master bedroom also has East & South windows in the master bedroom.   Thanks!!   Pam  See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

A Plum Accent

Rachel Writes: Hi,   I am just about to have a new kitchen fitted and we are also knocking the wall down that separates the kitchen and dining room making a bigger open space. My units are a light sand colour with a black worktop. The flooring will be a wood effect vinyl. I am keen to have plum as an accent colour - maybe the far wall in a plum flowered wallpaper and some plum furnishings. But I have no idea what colour to do the other 3 walls?  The room has 2 windows and is approx. 8m by 2.7m   Many thanks for your help See Answer From Lindsay Ballard »

Knotty Pine

Judy Writes: My early 1950's home has a 12' x 14' knotty pine den.  It is not the shellacked, dark knotty pine, but rather a light pine sealed with a clear satin-type finish.  There is one wall of bult-ins that are the same color, but the wood is just smooth.  This room needs some life.  Do I paint the knotty pine or not? Open Floor Plan

Patricia Writes: I have honey oak floors and trim with an open floor plan on the main floor. Currently the walls are painted white linen. I have a large wool oriental rug with predominate red tones in the living room with a stone fireplace that has yellow grout. There are tall windows on each side of the fireplace which is the focal point to the south. There is also a bank of windows on the west side behind where the couch is and a half wall on the east where the TV sits. The room is 12 by 12 but of course it’s open on the north side as a great room to a honey wood kitchen. I'd like to purchase a new sectional sofa. Currently I had dark brown leather but I'm thinking of switching to a lighter cream fabric. What colors should I paint the walls and will the lighter cream fabric on the sofa work?  See Answer From Kate Riley »

A Warm Neutral

Susan Writes: I have a very open living area with vaulted ceilings. I have a chocolate brown couch, sage green carpet and gold wing-back recliners that have little flecks of burgundy and brown. I want to paint the walls with some color. They are stark white right now. I was also thinking of doing an accent wall as well. I need help with paint colors!   See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

Paint is the Perfect Solution

KJ Writes: We recently bought a house with an outdated kitchen. While we wait to save the money to remodel it properly, we want to spruce it up with some paint. The kitchen is relatively small (approx. 10' x 10', I'd guess) with counters that are brick/maroon;  cabinets and walls that are white/off-white; appliances that are true white; and bleached (whitish) wood floors. None of the whites match. I'd like to paint the cabinets and walls so they work with the existing maroon counter, white appliances and light floors. I'm open to anything, but I was thinking neutrals -- something darker on the cabinets to contrast with floors and appliances, and something light/neutral on the walls because the space is smaller. The kitchen has one "window" that passes through to an addition, as a result it doesn't get any direct sunlight, but it does get a lot of indirect natural light. I'd love to hear your color suggestions for the walls and cabinets. See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

Pulling The Room Together

Justine Writes: Hi! I have been struggling with the colors for my family room right off the kitchen. It's very small-more of a hearth room. We painted the walls a very light gray color. Our sofa and chair are a microfiber tan. The fireplace and doors that lead to the deck are an oak/honey color. I need to pull the room together with a rug, pillows and drapery panels but I seem to be stuck on what colors/prints to go with. Printed curtains and solid rug or the other way around…? Pillows to tie everything together? Accessories? I am kind of paralyzed by indecision at the moment. Please help! See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

Working With Teal

Jane Writes: I have selected teal, a warm mustard yellow and an olive green for my living room. I have an adjoining family room where I will be painting the wall above a chair rail in white, but I am wondering what color to use below the chair rail. Should I go for a dark teal blue (to continue with the teal theme), or could I introduce a red or deep orange? I don't want too many colors fighting for attention. The family room is a south facing, sunny room. Thanks!  See Answer From Diane Henkler »

A Turquoise Palette

Earthy Tones

Jas Writes: I need help with paint colors. So I am trying to go with neutral/earthy tones.  I have already painted my living room Gentle Fawn by Glidden and my kitchen Willow Leaf also by Glidden.  I just need help choosing colors for the hallway and bathroom (see picture).  I do not know if I should go with a darker brown for the hallway?  Also, would a blue (like Glidden's slate green) for the bathroom, throw off the whole color scheme that I'm going for?  Please help!   Sorry for the dark photo. The bathroom is the dark room in the hallway with the night light.   Thank you See Answer From Nicole Balch »

Pairing Colors with Cherry Wood

Pat Writes: We are redoing our powder room which has no windows.  We are installing a cherry wood cabinet with a matching mirror.  What colors would go well with the cherry wood. We have tried looking at different colors (blue, green) but it seems like yellow and beige like colors are the only ones that may match well. Any ideas? See Answer From Kate Riley »

Bringing Personality to a New Home

Jennifer Writes: We purchased a new house recently. The great room is currently white, which feels washed out. We want to do chocolate furniture, complimenting with crèmes, gold’s, and whites with splashes of color through artwork and decoration. There are light colored hardwood floors as well. We were considering choosing a creamy mocha or tan, but are unsure what color will allow for change while not making the room bland. Also, the fireplace is in the middle of the room which makes it difficult to think how to set up the room for enjoying television, but creating a group atmosphere for guests. Please Help! :)   See Answer From Melissa Michaels »
