Kitchen Hinge Hassle

Julie Writes: I have just purchased my first home and am in the process of refinishing my kitchen cabinets. I am wondering if there is a way to paint the hinges on the cabinets (they are an odd shape) - they are a very dark color and my new knobs and pulls are silver.. I have read that they can be removed, cleaned, and spray painted with paint for metal, but wanted to confirm that this is actually true before I start spraying! I also plan on painting my kitchen a grey like Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore, with the cabinets a very very light, almost white-grey. Any suggestions for fun accent colors? Thanks! Creating Your Sanctuary

Andrea Writes: Hello! I'm building a house and am completely overwhelmed by all the desicions to be made.  Making matters worse, I'm terrible at picking paint color from swatches... The home has an open living room/kitchen/dining area, all trim and cabinetry is white, the floor is a medium tone hardwood, and there are 3 south facing windows and one east facing window for light. The only furniture I've purchased so far is a medium to dark grey tufted sofa.  I'd like my home to feel like my own personal sanctuary so I'm going for cozy, comfortable, homey, peaceful, and relaxing.  I tend to like muddier colors over clear ones but I like so many different colors I just can't figure it out!  Thanks! Neutralizing a Colorful Space

Elissa Writes: I attached a picture of the kitchen to the house we just bought.  I personally dont like yellow paint, but am having a hard time finding another color that will look good with these cabinets and floors, since they both have yellow hues to them. Any suggestions? Also, the adjacent living room has a HUGE red accent wall, so it'd need to match that as well! Thanks! See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

Grey Tones

Nicole Writes: We are planning on redoing our kitchen, and changing white counters and light oak cabinets to dark cabinets with lighter granite countertops.  I would like to stick with a neutral color on the wall but I'm sick of beige.  I wanted the cabinets to stand out so didn't want a paint color that was too dark, but I plan on doing neutral throughout the house so I wanted to do something a little different in the kitchen.  Help! A Satin Finish

Courtney Writes: We bought a flipped house a couple of years ago.  They painted the bathroom and kitchen in the same matte finish paint as the rest of the house.  We are ready to re-paint, but I'm not sure what to use in the kitchen and bathroom so it is easy to clean and wipe down.  What finish do you recommend in bathrooms and kitchens? Honey Oak Trim

Pam Writes: Everyone has white trim these days, so it's difficult to find any photos with honey oak trim. Can you suggest paint colors that go well with honey oak trim? In the dining room and kitchen we have an open floor plan with South facing windows, and a North facing window in the living room. Also, the master bedroom also has East & South windows in the master bedroom.   Thanks!!   Pam  See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

A Plum Accent

Rachel Writes: Hi,   I am just about to have a new kitchen fitted and we are also knocking the wall down that separates the kitchen and dining room making a bigger open space. My units are a light sand colour with a black worktop. The flooring will be a wood effect vinyl. I am keen to have plum as an accent colour - maybe the far wall in a plum flowered wallpaper and some plum furnishings. But I have no idea what colour to do the other 3 walls?  The room has 2 windows and is approx. 8m by 2.7m   Many thanks for your help See Answer From Lindsay Ballard »

Paint is the Perfect Solution

KJ Writes: We recently bought a house with an outdated kitchen. While we wait to save the money to remodel it properly, we want to spruce it up with some paint. The kitchen is relatively small (approx. 10' x 10', I'd guess) with counters that are brick/maroon;  cabinets and walls that are white/off-white; appliances that are true white; and bleached (whitish) wood floors. None of the whites match. I'd like to paint the cabinets and walls so they work with the existing maroon counter, white appliances and light floors. I'm open to anything, but I was thinking neutrals -- something darker on the cabinets to contrast with floors and appliances, and something light/neutral on the walls because the space is smaller. The kitchen has one "window" that passes through to an addition, as a result it doesn't get any direct sunlight, but it does get a lot of indirect natural light. I'd love to hear your color suggestions for the walls and cabinets. See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

Shades of White

Jana Writes: I have nutmeg color walls in my kitchen. (Not sure of the exact color, but it resembles nutmeg to me). I was wondering: I have plain oak cabinets and wanted to paint them. What color would you recommend that would go with the wall color? Thanks!  See Answer From Diane Henkler »

Working with Copper Accents

Kitchen Transformation

Suesan Writes: I am redoing my kitchen and I am stuck when it comes to color for the walls and cabinets. I exposed a brick wall behind my sink and I am doing board and batten (2/3 of the wall) on the open walls around the room, so I will have a lot of white in that section. I don't want standard white cabinets so I need to paint my cabinets because of some additions and changes I've made. I will have a light with blue mason jars in the room and other glass in that color around the room. I don't know what color to paint the walls or the cabinets. I'm leaning towards a “taupey” grey for the cabinets and a light version of the aqua to match the glass for the upper wall section, but I don't want too much aqua in the room.  I thought a soft yellow could be pretty too, but I'm honestly stuck. What do you suggest? Thanks! See Answer From Lindsay Ballard »

Color Questions

Pooja Writes: Hi, I have color questions for 2 rooms in my new house -  1. Master suite - I love the beachy feeling, so I planned to choose aquamarine for this room. This room also has high ceiling and large windows on 3 walls. I am not sure which color should I choose for the remaining wall.  2. Kitchen - I have picked cottage yellow for all the walls in my kitchen and white cabinets. I was thinking of painting my ceiling a sky blue color since it has a nice sky light on top. Also, I wanted to pick a dark color for the wall which hosts the breakfast nook. Which dark color will go well with sky blue ceiling & cottage yellow walls? Thanks, P See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

Mary Writes: Hello, I am painting my kitchen and I have red cupboards that I want to keep. I liked Fresh Pineapple for the walls but I was told red and yellow is too 90's. Subtle Hints of Blue

Ellen Writes: I live in a town home, and I’m painting my kitchen and living room which are close in proximity. I want a pretty gray in my living room and I was thinking about a blue such as Country House Blue for my kitchen. Color Flow

Cindy Writes: My living room is painted dark pine green on two walls.  The kitchen leads into the living room.  The kitchen is painted white and I want to do something different.  The ceiling will still be white, but what color would you suggest painting the walls and should it be all the walls or just a couple as an accent?  I'd like to do some kind of glass or metal tiles as a backsplash behind the stove so I guess everything will have to flow.  I was thinking about a medium to light yellow, peach or a medium tan.  Or do I need to stay with greens?  Any suggestions? Painting a Home to Sell

Lynn Writes: We have a "hill country" style home in Texas with all walnut stained trim, no white anywhere.  We are preparing to sell our home and were wondering what neutral color you would suggest.  Our home tends to be very dark inside with not a lot of natural light.  Wanting an all-around good color that would be appealing to buyers.  See Answer From Eduardo Rodriguez »

Never Boring Beige

Sally Writes: I have an open concept living floor. My kitchen is Frosted Pine by Glidden with brown granite counter tops. I love the color in the kitchen but I have no idea what color to paint the rest of the room. What color goes well with Frosted Pine that isn't too boring or beige and isn't so dark?
