Shades of White

Jana Writes: I have nutmeg color walls in my kitchen. (Not sure of the exact color, but it resembles nutmeg to me). I was wondering: I have plain oak cabinets and wanted to paint them. What color would you recommend that would go with the wall color? Thanks!  See Answer From Diane Henkler »

Sophisticated Cheer

Tessa Writes: We purchased a house that was built in 1860, which means tall ceilings, beautiful big windows and a need for repainting. When we moved in the kitchen had blue-green cupboards, a yellow countertop, and brass hardware. To top it off there was red wallpaper that had gold fruit in it. What we've done so far: The floors are now a beautiful mix of light to dark browns with a hint of caramel, and the counter tops are similar. The cupboards are now off-white, similar to Antique White. All of our appliances are white. We will probably be going with a mixed brown stone for the backsplash. I tried to go for a sophisticated feel by painting the kitchen walls a dark brown, and while it does look good, it's just too dark. I definitely like a much more cheery space. The attached dining room has off-white bead board that comes about waist high, the same flooring, and the walls are a pale celery color. I'm not 100% sold on the pale celery in the dining room, however I'm hoping it grows on me. I love greens, lavender, light blues and tans, and have these colors strewn about the house in pillows, picture frames and such; just touches of the colors here and there. What color would you suggest for the kitchen? Also any suggestions for the dining room would help as well. Thanks a bunch in advance! Tessa See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

Sage Green Couches

Sage Green Couches Writes: Hello, My husband and I are remodeling our home, and I'm trying to find colors to match our sage green couches. The problem is I want to go with a blue/grey color palette for the house, but I'm not sure what would match the couches. We've redone every room, but have yet to paint any of them, so this color would be my starting point for my color palette. I'm pretty open to most colors as long as they aren't super bright or super dark!  Thanks! See Answer From Diane Henkler »

Seeing Red...And Orange

Anonymous Writes: Hi! My son and daughter share a bedroom which needs to be painted.   One loves red and the other orange.   How can I add their favorite colors even though they do not coordinate well? I was thinking of maybe a neutral wall and then horizontal lines of each color?   The room has nothing specific to point out except for adequate lighting, white trim, and a closet. Thanks  See Answer From Lindsay Ballard »

The Ultimate Neutral

Caiti Writes: Hi, My dining table, end tables, coffee table, and various decorations are all black. I like to stick with neutrals and pops of color, so how can I lighten up my decor so it doesn’t look so dark and blank? Can you suggest a color scheme would be good with brown, black, and tan? We have a modern traditional style home if that helps. Thanks! See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

Warm Tones to Compliment Brick

Vaughn Writes: I have a "used" or distressed brick fireplace in our family room. I am installing hickory wood floors, with 6 inch white baseboards. I am looking for a paint color for the walls in either a soft gold, creamy ivory or pumpkin color.  I do not want the pumpkin color to look cheap against the brick, so thinking gold might be better? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks   See Answer From Kate Riley »

Go With Neutrals

Joan Writes: Hi! My daughter and I are painting her living/kitchen loft space next week.  She is looking to me for some color advice.  We have some ideas, but I would love to check in with you for some advice or thoughts.  The space has 12 foot ceilings and is an urban contemporary space with golden maple cabinets and similar toned wood floors.  It has a black granite bar and counter space, with off-white trim and plenty of light.  We’re looking for wall color to keep it sophisticated, clean and timeless.  She is considering Glidden's pale lemon.  Any other ideas or thoughts?   See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

Best Bet for Color

Rhonda Writes: Please help me! I can't make a color commitment. Our master bedroom has a medium grey focal wall and 3 light grey walls. I love the wall colors but for 2 years now have not been able to pick out curtains or accessories. I thought I wanted to go with yellow because I love the grey/yellow color combo I keep seeing on Pinterest, but every time I go shopping I am drawn to blues and greens. I have a lot of blues throughout the house and I like variety so I don't want blue hues, and I'm afraid if I go with green it won't be relaxing and Zen. I can't seem to picture it in my head. For my style I like to mix the new with old. I am building a sliding "barn door" to replace the door to the master bath that I will finish in an aged wood. I'm contemplating painting our black night stands antique white, along with my jewelry armoire. I’m afraid I am too mismatched. Help me finish this room please! See Answer From Melissa Michaels »

Subtle Hints of Blue

Adding Color Without Overwhelming

Georgia Writes: Hi! I have a large open concept living- hall - entry area. I want to add some color without it being overwhelming. Furniture is casual and chocolate brown. Looking at maybe Peacock Blue as an accent wall, but don't know what to use to compliment that. It's been a boring tan for many years, so I'm open to color ideas. I also have some inspiration pillows that have teal- turquoise- reds and yellows in them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! See Answer From Lindsay Ballard »

Golden Oak Trim

What wall colors would work well with this combination?  I'd like to add some color without going overboard. See Answer From Stefanie Schiada »

Yellow Tones

Wendy Writes: Good Morning!  I am working on a sewing room and wanted to go with some color. However the color I chose (Toasted Coconut) is not working for me. I only have half of one wall painted but knew the instant I rolled the first of the paint that it didn’t work for the space. My room is 17' x 9'6, with one window.  Could you please give me a little help with the best color choice or a couple of ideas that you think may work? My room will be very organized but at the same time will be very full and busy! I feel the color that I chose closes the room in.  Thank you,  Wendy See Answer From Kate Riley »
