Atlanta Designers Find Inspiration for Design and Doing Good
by Erika Ward on July 3rd, 2013
A love for design and a commitment to serve others was the inspiration for Room Service Atlanta, a non-profit group I co-founded with fellow interior designer, Dayka Robinson. We, along with twenty-three of Atlanta’s top designers most recently designed two cottages on the campus of the United Methodist Children’s Home (UMCH) in Decatur, Georgia. With generous donations from vendors like Glidden Paint and our premiere furniture sponsor, Mitchell Gold Bob Williams, and many others, we were able to deliver deserving design to those who needed it most.
The youth that will live in these remarkable spaces are participants in the Independent Living Program at UMCH. They range in age from 17-21 and are learning how to transition from foster care into self sufficiency. We at Room Service Atlanta firmly believe that a beautiful environment is also a nurturing place that helps to heal life’s wounds and restore hope. The following spaces perpetuate this belief.
Ally Kim of From the Right Bank designed this happy-chic, sun-drenched space with restored vintage finds and lush greenery. Girls may gather here to engage in lively conversation or simply indulge in an engaging novel. Love these colors? Try Pumpkin Patch and Swan White.
Crafty mavens Jennifer Baggett and Liz Ballard of Where We Nestle blog created a haven for creativity and fun in this studio-style living space. A soothing palette of lilac, gray, and creamy white provide the perfect backdrop for pops of hot pink and the design duo’s impressive litany of DIY projects. Get this dainty look with Glidden’s Essence of Lilac and Pebble Gray.
Color took the lead for the inspiration for my room design. I was immediately smitten with Glidden’s Indigo Night, a rich blue hue with a hint of purple, and used it for an accent wall. The base color of the room, Glidden’s Polished Limestone, is a barely-there green complements that the various purple tones used in this spritely, yet restful retreat.
After having lunch with a friend in her gorgeous Atlanta kitchen I was instantly taken by her fresh green cabinetry and had to duplicate the look for this young resident. This kitchen also received a brand new countertop, sink, plumbing fixtures, and light fixture. Giddy about green? Try Glidden’s Western Cactus in your kitschy kitchen.
I continued with Polished Limestone in the bathroom creating a squeaky clean palette for color and pattern. Black, white, and neon hues bring excitement to the space, while newly painted cabinets, new countertops, lighting fixtures, and plumbing fixtures set the stage for improved functioning and style.
Eddie Brumbaugh of Jackson Charles Design Studio took her affection for injecting classic pieces with flair and made this studio shine like a model home. Glidden’s Smooth Stone provides a relaxing background for accents in cobalt blue and persimmon. A curvaceous custom headboard upholstered in a luxurious velvet was inspired by Glidden’s Cool Cobalt paint.
Thanks to design trio Angela Blehm (The Painted House), Lori May (Lori May Interiors), and Rhoda Vickers (Southern Hospitality) a budding woman will feel like a beautiful flower. Grounded by an intense overdyed pink rug, her bedroom is a restful retreat enveloped in sophistication. Follow their lead by pairing bright pink, orange, and navy blue with Polished Limestone.
In the neighboring kitchen, Glidden’s Rich Navy covers the newly painted cabinetry. Antique brass hardware finishes the look.
Vintage bathing suit prints by Wendover Art were the inspiration for the room designed by Kandrac and Kole Interior Design. Coastal chic best describes the design aesthetic built on a palette of gray, green, navy, and crisp white. Glidden’s Bedford Gray plays well with primary colors and keeps the focus on the artwork and playful patterns.
The love for gray continues with Fashion Gray used as the wall color. Retailer I.O. Metro designed a handsome on-trend lounge in the boys’ cottage with mixed seating provides a comfortable place for perfect for entertaining visitors.
Across the hall, Danny Tovar of Danto Designs bring New York City design to Decatur. Crisp Linen White by Glidden covers the room from floor to ceiling and creates a loft-like vibe in this three-room suite. Layered neutral hues, textures, and forms keep white interesting.
Dayka Robinson, Room Service Atlanta co-founder, created a masculine bedroom fit for a gentleman. A monochromatic palette of moody green intergrated with abstract patterns via artwork and pillows. Fiery red effectively punctuates the design via throw pillows and a pair of glossy red lamps. Achieve this look with Glidden’s Bronzed Ivy and Willow Leaf.
For the gamers of the cottage, Rhonda E. Peterson of Rhonda Peterson & Associates, L.L.C. created a fun-filled multi-use entertainment center complete with a plush sectional gray sectional, game table, and gaming chairs. Glidden’s Extreme White, Cosmic Blue, Orangery, and Wallflower Wind will help you to achieve the same energy in your space.
