How to Turn a Desk Into a Vanity

desk makeover 1

Choosing a vanity for a bathroom can be quite a task. You should always shop around for the perfect vanity since it is one of the key pieces in the bathroom that will set the tone for the rest of its decor. And sometimes the right vanity could be right in front of you without you knowing it. An old piece of furniture sitting in your garage or a flea market find could in fact make an amazing vanity.

I recently scored this old beauty at a vintage store, which gave me the idea to turn a desk into a vanity for a bathroom I was working on. It was the perfect style and size for the country chic look I was going for. One thing to remember when you turn a desk into a vanity (or any other piece of furniture for that matter) is to adapt it to its new purpose in life. Since this old desk was going to live in a space where water and moisture are constants, I had to make sure it would survive the elements.

Although I wanted a rustic look for the vanity, I still had to repair some of the wear and tear of the desk and replace the beaten top with a new one. Storage is a plus in any bathroom, so I added a bottom shelf to the vanity.

When it came to painting (my favorite part of any DIY project), I decided to use Glidden paint’s Semi Gloss finish for its durability—I actually recommend it for any bathroom project. For most of the desk I chose Glidden paint’s Pebble Grey, but since I was determined to add a bit of whimsy, I decided to paint the top of the vanity and bottom part of the legs a lighter shade of grey for contrast (Glidden Paint’s Pearl Grey). I feel it was the perfect touch!

In order to save the drawer, I had to modify its interior to make room for the sink’s plumbing. This was a very simple step that saved some coveted storage space for toiletries.

A very important detail when transforming a piece of furniture into a vanity is making the top waterproof. For this project I chose white glass, a great and affordable material that looks sleek and adds personality.

Of course, no furniture makeover project is complete without the right set of accessories.

Changing the drawer was easy and made all the difference, don’t you think?

I hope this project has inspired you to see the potential in furniture that, while in need of some TLC, can be transformed into new pieces that will add character and style to any room. Happy painting!
